Make Unit Conversions in the Metric System

In the metric system, units are related by powers of 1010. The root words of their names reflect this relation. For example, the basic unit for measuring length is a meter. One kilometer is 10001000 meters; the prefix kilo- means thousand. One centimeter is 1100\frac{1}{100} of a meter, because the prefix centi- means one one-hundredth (just like one cent is 1100\frac{1}{100} of one dollar). The equivalencies of measurements in the metric system are shown in the reference table below. The common abbreviations for each measurement are given in parentheses.
Metric Measurements
Length Mass Volume/Capacity
11 kilometer (km) = 10001000 m 11 hectometer (hm) = 100100 m 11 dekameter (dam) = 1010 m 11 meter (m) = 11 m 11 decimeter (dm) = 0.10.1 m 11 centimeter (cm) = 0.010.01 m 11 millimeter (mm) = 0.0010.001 m 11 kilogram (kg) = 10001000 g 11 hectogram (hg) = 100100 g 11 dekagram (dag) = 1010 g 11 gram (g) = 11 g 11 decigram (dg) = 0.10.1 g 11 centigram (cg) = 0.010.01 g 11 milligram (mg) = 0.0010.001 g 11 kiloliter (kL) = 10001000 L 11 hectoliter (hL) = 100100 L 11 dekaliter (daL) = 1010 L 11 liter (L) = 11 L 11 deciliter (dL) = 0.10.1 L 11 centiliter (cL) = 0.010.01 L 11 milliliter (mL) = 0.0010.001 L
11 meter = 100100 centimeters 11 meter = 10001000 millimeters 11 gram = 100100 centigrams 11 gram = 10001000 milligrams 11 liter = 100100 centiliters 11 liter = 10001000 milliliters
To make conversions in the metric system, we will use the same technique we did in the U.S. system. Using the identity property of multiplication, we will multiply by a conversion factor of one to get to the correct units. Have you ever run a 5 k\text{5 k} or 10 k\text{10 k} race? The lengths of those races are measured in kilometers. The metric system is commonly used in the United States when talking about the length of a race.

example

Nick ran a 10-kilometer\text{10-kilometer} race. How many meters did he run? (credit: William Warby, Flickr) A photograph of 8 male runners in a track race. Solution We will convert kilometers to meters using the Identity Property of Multiplication and the equivalencies in the reference table from earlier.
1010 kilometers
Multiply the measurement to be converted by 11. 10km110 \color{red}{km}\cdot 1
Write 11 as a fraction relating kilometers and meters. 10km1000m1km10 \color{red}{km}\cdot \frac{1000 m}{1\color{red}{km}}
Simplify. 10km1000m1km\frac{10\color{red}{km}\cdot 1000 m}{1\color{red}{km}}
Multiply. 10,00010,000 m
Nick ran 10,00010,000 meters.

  Since the metric system is based on multiples of ten, conversions involve multiplying by multiples of ten. In Decimal Operations, we learned how to simplify these calculations by just moving the decimal. To multiply by 10,100,or100010,100,\text{or}1000, we move the decimal to the right 1,2,or31,2,\text{or}3 places, respectively. To multiply by 0.1,0.01,or0.0010.1,0.01,\text{or}0.001 we move the decimal to the left 1,2,or31,2,\text{or}3 places respectively. We can apply this pattern when we make measurement conversions in the metric system. In the previous example, we changed 32003200 grams to kilograms by multiplying by 11000(or0.001)\frac{1}{1000}\left(\text{or}0.001\right). This is the same as moving the decimal 33 places to the left. Multiplying 3200 by 1 over 1000 gives 3.2. Notice that the answer, 3.2, is similar to the original value, 3200, just with the decimal moved three places to the left.

Convert: 1. 350350 liters to kiloliters 2. 4.14.1 liters to milliliters.

Answer: Solution 1. We will convert liters to kiloliters. In the reference table, we see that 1 kiloliter=1000 liters\text{1 kiloliter}=\text{1000 liters}.

350350 L
Multiply by 11, writing 11 as a fraction relating liters to kiloliters. 350L1kl1000L350 L \cdot \frac{1 kl}{1000 L}
Simplify. 350L1kl1000L350 \color{blue}{L} \cdot \frac{1 kl}{1000 \color{blue}{L}}
Move the decimal 33 units to the left. .
0.350.35 kL
2. We will convert liters to milliliters. In the reference table, we see that 1 liter=1000milliliters.\text{1 liter}=1000\text{milliliters.}
4.14.1 L
Multiply by 11, writing 11 as a fraction relating milliliters to liters. 4.1L1000ml1L4.1 L \cdot \frac{1000 ml}{1 L}
Simplify. 4.1LL1000ml1L4.1 L \color{blue}{L} \cdot \frac{1000 ml}{1 \color{blue}{L}}
Move the decimal 33 units to the right. .

Use Mixed Units of Measurement in the Metric System

Performing arithmetic operations on measurements with mixed units of measures in the metric system requires the same care we used in the U.S. system. But it may be easier because of the relation of the units to the powers of 1010. We still must make sure to add or subtract like units.

example

Ryland is 1.61.6 meters tall. His younger brother is 8585 centimeters tall. How much taller is Ryland than his younger brother?

Answer: Solution We will subtract the lengths in meters. Convert 8585 centimeters to meters by moving the decimal 22 places to the left; 8585 cm is the same as 0.850.85 m. Now that both measurements are in meters, subtract to find out how much taller Ryland is than his brother. \begin{array}{}\\ \\ \hfill \text{1.60 m}\\ \hfill \underset{\text{_______}}{\text{-0.85 m}}\\ \hfill \text{0.75 m}\end{array} Ryland is 0.750.75 meters taller than his brother.
